Worst railway accident in India

On this day 32 years ago ( June 6,1981), a railway accident which termed as worst in India so far, occurred when an over crowded passenger train derailed and seven of the nine compartments plunged into the river Bagmati near the town of Samastipur in the state of Bihar. As many as 400 people were reported dead. But the real cause of the accident remained shrouded in mystery. According to one inquiry, sudden application of brakes by the driver sighting oxen on the railway track.

Another explanation suggested that a sudden flash flood swept away the railway bridge and  washed the train from the track killing so many people.
