Take a different approach

I always prefer to work in small or mid-sized newspapers, magazines or TV stations because there I can torn up the conventional news structures or my editors allow me to experiment with unconventional story angle as they are not market leaders in news.So they may have little to lose in experimenting with unconventional news structure.

In Calcutta,I am sorry to say that local newspapers or magazines or TV stations follow the same thing except big and traditional houses. A new newspaper try to blend entertainment with news and amalgamate the style of tabloid with broadsheet to attract young readers. As a result, within a year their circulation crosses a quarter of a million. The structure of news has change a lot in recent years. In the era of multi media journalism,digital correspondents,why we stick to the time tested journalism? we should ask ourselves.

I do believe, that I may be a regional reporter,but I should be a global outlook.Why regional media takes traditional approaches and behave like regional media? They should learn from their American counterparts. They avoid sting operations and follow the same news structures.I get story ideas and brush up my journalism skill by reading regional newspapers or watching local TV stations around the world.In this digital age,I’m a global citizen.I try to follow ‘start with emotion rather than facts’ style.Always remember, now-a-days,we don’t need good reporters but reporters who think differently.

The Oscars my Choice

Who Loses and Who Wins? The 85th Annual Academy Awards will take place on February 24 (Sunday) at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Whoever wins, but here my choices :

Nominations for best picture:

And my choice: Life of Pie

The gigantic bridge

Millau a small village in France is one of my favorite places to visit. Once in a lifetime experience to drive through the 2.5 km (2,500 meters) long Millau Viaduct bridge from which there is a picturesque view of the valley below.  The gigantic cable bridge over Tarn river in southern France connects roadways between Paris in France and Barcelona,Spain.The center pillar of the 343 meters or 1,063 feet mastic high bridge above the Vally which is even taller than Eiffel Tower by 19 meters. The bridge opened in 2004 is unique for it’s transparent aerodynamic side wind screen that protects vehicles from strong winds.

Investigative reporters should work quietly

I think that investigative reporters should work quietly relying on their own instincts,their overall knowledge and their own confidence.No one feel their presence.That’s the difference between a general reporter and an investigative reporter Before every assignment,Investigative Journalists should feel the urge to follow the procedures mentioned by Radio &Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) with their own perspective such as:

• What is the role of video in the story?Does it bring real value?Is it necessary to use a hidden camera in this story?why?

• Does the story involve insignificant Private matters (even if emotional)or are there matters of vital public concern,prevention of profound harm or system failure?

• Is the rationale for the story simply to win a prize or beat the competition?

• Do your motives involve getting the story quickly and cheaply,rationalizing that others have done it or that the story subjects themselves unethical?

• Are hidden-cameras to be used primarily to create drama?Can a visible camera be used with the same impact?

• Have you used all traditional means to investigate the story,including interviews and reviewing public records and documents?

• What happens if the reporters cover is blown?

• Can a reporter lie to maintain his cover?

• What happens if the reporter sees a crime being committed?

• Where will the camera be used in a public place?quasi Public? Private home?

• Will the reporter enter private property without consent or owners to tape?

• Will editing be allowed to alter contents?

Lily the best

Someone has asked me which films of Lily Carter do you watch regularly? My favorite adult actress

Marilyn Chambers, best known for her role for Behind the Green Door and Insatiable, is one my favorite adult actresses. 56 years old actress was found dead three years ago in her home in California. She also best remembered for her roles in hardcore adult films like Behind the Green Door, The Resurrection of Eve, Inside Marilyn Chambers,Never a Tender Moment, Up ‘n Coming,Insatiable 1 & 2, Marilyn Chambers’ Guide to Dirty Dancing,Marilyn Chambers’ Guide to Masturbation,Nantucket Housewives,Marilyn Chambers’ Guide to Oral Sex,Up ‘n Coming,Edge Play. Crime & More World a magazine with a difference

As an experienced Journalist I do believe  for not-for-profit venture, digital International (Online) magazine should be the top priority for communications and spreading awareness. For our proposed English crime and human rights digital magazine which will be published from January/February 2013  wants  to highlight and aware people about the global issues like human trafficking,Drug trafficking, atrocities against LGBT community, cross border terrorism,Cyber Crime,Forensic sciences,criminal psychology,Atrocities against women, AIDS/HIV, Domestic Violence, Corruption in high places, serial killer and other issues that matter the most.It will be interactive in nature with additional content.

But at the same time, I agree with experts that  the two worlds (Digital and Print) can co-exist and support one another. Many readers still prefer to consume printed articles. Some experts still believe that the notion ‘death of print’ have been greatly exaggerated. I also believe that the printed word have greater impact than digital one. For the reason, I want to  produce 64/68 pages high-quality, full-color monthly magazine routinely in Bengali language because it is our mother tongue and subsequently in other languages in India. For example,  Women trafficking is major problem in West Bengal. According to one estimate,half a million Indian children under age 16 are exploited in the sex trade. So we think that awareness is necessary to eradicate these kind of crime against humanity. We want to promote community awareness by connecting people.

We need minimum $5000 to run the magazine (Digital and Print) every month.We edited a small and independent alternative women’s magazine ADITI with shoe string budget and skeleton stuff. We used royalty free pictures and permissible articles with due courtesy. So, we have the expertise to run a magazine which believes in public interest journalism. Marilyn. Z.Tomlins, a renowned crime writer based in Paris is the Editor-in-Chief of our new true crime and human rights magazine and contributed regularly for ADITI. We need donation to keep the magazine (both online and print) alive.

Backers of the project will receive copies of Crime & More World every month. Their names will appear in the English online edition.They will get special mementos with their photographs ( Polaroids). Crime & More World will also organize fundraiser  incentive reward  programs.
