Searching for a daughter

Ruman Das’s nightmare began on November 22, 2010 when he lost contact with his minor daughter Sabi. She went to Delhi accompanied by a relative Lalita Das for a better living. Dhiren Das and his wife Sabitri told Ruman, a cobbler from Central Calcutta that she could earn enough money by running a beauty parlour after training at Delhi. Their daughter Laly who lives in Delhi had promised her work. Sabi’s parents felt proud that their daughter could help support them. Sabi thought she could help her impoverished parents. But the dreams were short-lived. As the day wore on, Ruman and his wife grew more concerned because Sabi hadn’t phoned them. ” Dhiren suggested me to go to Delhi. I went to Delhi accompanied by him to trace out my minor daughter. But seeing me, Laly became furious and told me bluntly that my daughter could be traced on spending Rs 50,000 To 60,000 ($ 1,000 to 1,200) but I could not meet their demand and returned empty handed.”

After returning from Delhi, he went to Liluah Police Station, Howrah to lodge a missing person report. He again lodged a FIR under the section of 363 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He alleged that even after repeated pleas, police did not start to take action. Ruman also alleged that after she arrived in Delhi, Laly sold her to a brothel. He fears that confined and beaten, the frightened teenager might be force into prostitution. He also lodged another general diary to CID but even that hasn’t helped.  According to social activists,  Insufficient laws, poor enforcement, ineffective penalties and minimal chances of prosecution play a role in thriving sex trafficking. Recently, Ruman accompanied police officers on a raid of the residence of Laly at Rohini, Delhi, arrested her and brought her back. But she was not produce in Court. The Investigating officer (IO) of the case refused to comment on this matter. Ruman also started receiving threatening phone calls from Dhiren Das and others. But he refused to be cowed down and he only wants to trace out his beloved daughter.

AIDS menace in India

India has an HIV/AIDS population of 5.1 million, second only to South Africa with 5.3 million infected people, according to World heath organisation (WHO). National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) estimates that there are 5.2 million HIV infected people in India.

The Flying sex workers are more infected than other sex workers because they don’t always take the precautions and they don’t have the bargaining power.Indian Government  spend about Rs.430 million a year on prevention and awareness campaigns of sex related disease  but India needs much more to fight the AIDS menace.Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra ,Manipur and Nagaland are the worst hit states of India.

Sudipta Sen proves that polygamy is widely practiced in India

Sudipta Sen, the man behind the biggest Ponzi scam in the history of Bengal who operated the unlicensed funds, duped hundreds of thousands of depositors in West Bengal and other parts of Eastern India allegedly has three wives.

Polygamy is widely practiced all over India since ancient time. Some important politicians, film personalities even common people have more than one wife. It is widely used (converting to Muslim religion) as an escape route. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has three wives. Former Haryana deputy chief minister Chander Mohan, who had hit the headlines few years back for marring assistant advocate-general Anuradha Bali after converting to Muslim. Chander Mohan became Chand Mohammad and Anuradha became Fiza. Bollywood actor Dharmendra married actress Hema Malini with out divorcing his first wife.Other film personalities also practice polygamy openly like producer Bonny Kapur (he married actress Sridevi),script writer Salim, film director Mahesh Bhatt.

Practicing polygamy were a tradition in ancient Hindu society.Kings and other persons practiced polygamy.Under Hindu Marriage Act, polygamy is forbidden for Hindu, Jains, and Sikhs. Fatima found her in a brothel

Shortly before midnight on a Sunday, I met Fatima (name changed). Fatima,a 30-year-old, dressed in a blue sari told me, “I’m here to say you something.” Then she narrated how she and other girls from Bangladesh were forced to work as prostitutes in brothels.

Three summers ago, Fatima along with several others Bangladeshi nationals traveled across one of porous border of Bengal and caught a night train to Sealdah. Then they were lured by some men by offering decent jobs. After that they traveled with them to a nearby place. But later Fatima found her in a brothel room.

The number of Bangladeshi women  in red light areas in India is increasing day by day.In  red light areas of Mumbai their number is nearly 5,000, 20 percent of 25,000 sex workers, while even 20 years ago there was hardly any Bangladeshi girl in brothels in Mumbai.

Recently, I visited the border areas of  West Bengal where Bangladeshi girls from poor families being brought in as sex-workers. Here, I found a girl from a very poor family in Rangpur district of Bangladesh and had been brought to a brothel in Calcutta by a man named Motiul to work as a sex worker. But, she somehow managed to flee.

Saradha fiasco: Bleak future awaits for journalists

I have a dream that one day local TV stations in Calcutta will have their station helicopters which can be used for important live broadcasts like police chasing law offenders, major fire breaks out, massive political rallies like their American counterparts. Obviously there are some ethical issues. For example, few months back, a news channel of America, Fox News had apologized after telecasting live feed of a man shooting himself and collapsed, chased by police car in Phonex,Arizona. Generally, in these situation TV stations delay live telecast for a few seconds to cut away from violent footage which could effect viewers sensibility. In this case, the TV station failed to delay the helicopter feed (the station helicopter followed the car chasing and filmed it). But recent developments in Bengal where more than 1500 journalists and technicians lost their job after the closure of a business organisation which owns several local newspapers and TV stations, saddened me.

news1The owner Sudipto Sen of Saradha group  is thought to have been in hiding is known as the close confident of senior leaders of ruling TMC. The present government patronized some newspapers and TV stations which blindly support all policies of the government. I wrote on my earlier blogs that they even play the role of unofficial mouthpiece of the party. Some so called journalists behave like loyal party workers to appease TMC leadership to secure their future. In fact, media monopoly is a worrying trend in Bengal. Political interests led to further monopolization of private media. The organisation lured depositors from rural and semi-urban areas by promising high returns. news2These type of organisations didn’t have any permissions from Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and other government regulatory bodies to run their business by maintaining close proximity with the leaders of the ruling party. The top leadership has encouraged local businessmen to buy or take over news channels or newspapers and in return support their illegal activities. These unscrupulous promoters have also not done the media industry any favors by investing in it. Experts say that you are not here (Journalism) to merely make a living or you should believe in mission of journalism. But for many, this profession gives the chance to fulfill their ambition. So in Bengal bleak future awaits for journalists. Despite the setback, I still hope that one day market leaders in news will try to torn up the conventional news structure and use live helicopter feed to attract viewers.

Sunny the adult super star

I am not interested whether Sunny Leon, an Indian origin Canadian adult film star the Bollywood’s newest sensation or not. Her hot and sizzling dance performances in a recent Bolly movie made headlines. As a keen adult film industry watcher, when I first interviewed (email) Daniel Webber, the husband of Sunny and an industry insider, very few people in India knew the name of the adult film super star and how the industry works. Even now, they have little idea that it is a multi billion dollar industry and they are very professional people in their job. Due to rampant video piracy and illegal down loading, the industry faces uncertain future and people associated with the industry including performers seek greener pastures. As a professional and an owner of a studio in Los Angeles, she must be aware of the economic situation in America and the Europe. I think, the adult film industry which is supposedly going through a bad patch. This type of situation might have compelled her to go for the Indian market which is huge.
