Behaving like a political leader
Experts say that you are not here (Journalism) to merely make a living or you should believe in mission of journalism. But for many, this profession gives the chance to fulfill their ambition.
Recently, chief minister of Bengal and the supremo of Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) announced the names of four candidates including three journalists for Rajy Sabha (House of the People). Yesterday, they filed their nomination in presence of Mamata Banarjee.During election campaigning for the assembly election in 2010, Kunal Ghosh involved in campaigning for the TMC. He is very close to Mamata.According to insiders, she selected two other journalists to appease minority and Hindi speaking community in Bengal. Kunal is associated with a newspaper and a news channel. In news studio, he is behaving like a TMC leader and splits venom against Communist party of India (Marxist) leaders.
The previous Left Front government controlled or favored some TV channels and newspapers. Aajkal, a Bengali language newspaper dubbed as an unofficial mouthpiece of CPI(M). After TMC led by Mamata Banarjee came to power after 34 years of Left Front rule, Sambad Pratidin another Bengali daily plays the same role.In fact, Media monopoly is a worrying trend in Bengal.Political interests led to further monopolization of private media.
According to International journalists network (Ijnet):
Many U.S. news organizations have policies discouraging journalists from revealing political affiliations outside of work for the sake of safeguarding the organization’s impartiality. For instance, many U.S. newspapers do not allow reporters to voice their opinions publicly, march in demonstrations, volunteer in political campaigns, wear political buttons, or attach bumper stickers to their cars….On the other hand, at many other news organizations around the world, some journalists are essentially advocates for political parties, in many cases hired by a news organization because of their affiliation.
In my opinion, Journalists have every right to promote a certain political view but if they want to make a political carrier, he should or must quit the profession and join politics.
