In India’s largest red light area(sonagachi-golden tree) over 10,000 women and girls work as sex workers.
These women and girls often came into this trade due to poverty,their close relatives also abandoned them.
Trafficking also a major problem.Innocent girls from neighbouring Nepal and Bangladesh were forced to enter into this trade.
Born into Brothels was a documentary made by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman about the children of sex workers of Sonagachi of Calcutta.
Born into Brothels was awarded as the winner of the annual academy award 2004 as the best documentary feature
Born into Brothels highlighted the plight of kids born and brought up in red light areas.
Non-governmental organisations like Durbar Mahila Samity are trying to improve the conditions of sex workers in Sonagachi(Golden Tree).
Kids of sex workers of Sonagachi now get admitted to schools use their mothers name thanks to the efforts of non-governmental organisations.
Non-governmental organisations like Durbar Mahila Samity also help police to rescue minor girls often bought into Sonagachi by pimps.
Often police of near by Police station harass clients.There are nexus between pimps and the police in red light areas.
There are around 850 minors among children of sex workers who live in Sonagachi.
Apart from sexworkers who are attached to brithels,there are about 3,000 flying sexworkers around Sonagachi.
Majority of sex workers have babus(master)to whom they share special relation.
Around mid 1700,red light areas around Calcutta flourished.Later,European Sailors used to visit Sonagachi. National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) estimates that there are 5.2 million HIV infected people in India.
According to Experts,Calcutta and its suburbs have a huge floating population of about 15,000 sex workers. There is also large of people who travel to Calcutta by bus or by train every morning and return home to the suburbs at night. They are the most vulnerable group for sex workers and for AIDS.
But due to relentless efforts by NGOs,sex workers persude their clients to use condoms for safer sex.
