The United Progressive Alliance(UPA) averted a major crisis during its 5 year rule when the Left, the main allies of UPA formerly withdrew support on July 7,2008,the day Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met American President George Bush in Japan.CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat and his comrades met President Pratibha Patil The four left parties(CPI-M,CPI,forward Block,Revolutionary socialist Party)snapped their ties of four years and 47 day with the Indian National Congress led centre over nuclear deal. After that massive horse trading was going for the July22 vote of confidence in House of the people(Lok Sabha). After hard barganning the bitter foe of the Congress Smajwadi Party(SP) came closer to each other.Despite the Indian National Congress and the Samajwadi party combined strength, the Congress needed another 29 to cross the halfway mark of 272.The total strength of SP in the house of the people is 39(But some Member of Parliament of SP openly announced that they would vote against the motion).Desperate for survival,INC wooded everyone from large parties to smaller ones and independents with a plea to back the nuclear deal and the Government.

On 22 July, Congres-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) won the the vote of confidence(275-256) but
raised serious concern over the main opposition party the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) MPs’ bribe allegations and in which manner they waved wads of currency notes in parliament.
